iPads are great devices to capture the world around us. One question that often arises is, “How can I get those videos and photos off of an iPad and add them to my computer?” There are several ways to do this with cloud solutions like Photo Stream, Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, and Box. These solutions are great but this post will explore how you can transfer pictures and video with the USB charge/sync cable directly to your computer.

The instructions vary depending on the computer you are using. If you are using a Mac click the Mac link below. If you are using a Windows computer, click the Windows link below.

Instructions for Windows:

  • Start by connecting your iPad USB cable/charger to your computer (Your computer may automatically open iTunes or other programs but you can close them)
  • After connecting, it will take a few moments to install the necessary software/driver

Installing Driver - Windows

  • Once this step is complete, unlock your iPad and select Trust on the screen

  • In most instances, a Windows Auto Play window like the one below should pop up. If not, you can always go to Start > Computer and access the iPad in the Computer list. In the Auto Play window, select “Open device to view files”

AutoPlay iPad Photos

  • This will open a file browsing window and you will see Internal Storage as the only option. At this point, double click Internal Storage > DCIM and dig into the folders and files until you find the video or photo that you desire.

iPad File Structure Windows

  •  Once you have found the photo or video file you want, you can click on the photo or video (or select multiple files) and drag them to the place you want them. It will take a few moments to copy over the files but once you have done this, a copy of the photo or video will now be on your computer and not just the iPad. If you are finished with the video or photo, it can be deleted from the device. Note: Having a second copy of any file is always a good idea! So wait to delete until you are sure you have the file you desire.
  • At this point you can disconnect your iPad from the computer and begin working with your photo and video files on your computer.

Instructions for Macintosh:

  • Start by connecting your iPad USB cable/charger to your computer (Your computer may automatically open iTunes or other programs but you can close them)
  • After connecting, unlock your iPad and select Trust on the screen

  • Open a program called Image Capture on your Mac. You can do this by going to Finder > Applications > Image Capture. You can always search for program with the magnifying glass (Spotlight) in the top right corner.

  • Once Image Capture opens: 1. Select any or all of the photos and videos you want to import to your computer. 2. Select the location where you want those items to be saved. 3. Click Import for the selected items or Import All for everything on the iPad. The files you selected will then be copied to your computer in the location you selected.

  • At this point you can disconnect your iPad from the computer and begin working with your photo and video files on your computer.
  • Final note for Mac users: You can use iPhoto and iMovie to import your photos and make projects with them. This solution will just move the photo and videos files to your computer without going through an editor like iMovie or iPhoto.
