The more we create online, the more we rely on media. If we want to be good digital citizens, we need to abide by copyright law, and only use media that we produce or that others have given us permission to use. Fortunately, there are many sites dedicated to sharing media for use in online projects. Each site has it’s expectations, so read the fine print, but I’ve found that the links below are a good starting place when seeking royalty-free media.

4FreePhotos– Free high quality photos. Images free for personal and commercial usage.

Clker– The online royalty free public domain clip art.

Copy Paste Character– Find categorized special characters, copy with one click and paste wherever you need.

EduPics– Free coloring pages, crafts, drawings and photographs. Children can use these images to learn about many different subjects. Pictures for educational use.

FreeDigitalPhotos– Download free and premium stock photos and illustrations. Our professional, royalty free images can be used in business and personal design projects.

Free Music Archive– The Free Music Archive is an interactive library of high-quality, legal audio downloads directed by WFMU.

freeSFX– Download Free Sound Effects.

Google Web Fonts– Hundreds of free, open-source fonts optimized for the web.

Humanline- Royalty Free Images, Stock Images, Portraits, Old Maps, Illustrations, Engravings, Teacher Resources & Educational Resources.

IconFinder– IconFinder provides high quality icons for webdesigners and developers in an easy and efficient way.

Imagebase– Free Stock Photography.

Jamendo– Allows users to download and listen to albums, and also to discover and share new artists. The content is under one of the Creative Commons licenses.

morgueFile– Contains high-resolution stock photography images free for either corporate or private use.

PhotoPin– Photo Pin is a free tool that helps bloggers and designers find beautiful photos for blogs and websites using Creative Commons licensing.

Photos for Class– Search now to download properly attributed, Creative Commons photos for school!

Pixabay– Pixabay.com is an international community for sharing quality public domain images.

Search Creative Commons– Creative Commons licenses provide a flexible range of protections and freedoms for authors, artists, and educators. This site will help you find photos, music, text, books, educational material, and more that is free to share or build upon utilizing Creative Commons enabled search services at Google and Flickr.

SonicSquirrel– All music You find here is released under open licenses (mainly Creative Commons). You can listen to and download all releases for free!

SoundGator– Free Sound Effects.

Stock Footage for Free– Completely free stock footage. Simply register and download free stock footage instantly. No fees, no catch, unlimited downloads.

VectorStock– Royalty free vector stock images, illustrations, graphics and icons. Multiple artists.

Veezzle– Find free stock photos for your documents, web sites, blog etc. with our awesome free stock photo search engine.
